要谈大型PLC先从其发展源起开始，工业自动化的兴起，让从60年代后期到70年代初期发展的PLC快速抬头，PLC是NC(数值控制)型工作机械、机械人等各类自动机械的控制装置，所以也被称作PC(ProgramableController)、Sequencer(程序器)、SequencerController(程序控制器)。随着微电子学日新日异的技术发展，加上使用高度微处理器及记忆体元件，因此PLC超越了当初单纯代替转换式程序控制盘的机能。在复杂的自动化产业设备中，它不但提供了运算控制、资讯处理、高机能、的网路，而且也可以和其他的控制组件、FA电脑一起使用，建构一个系统完整的机械设备。
