灰度照明分为直射照明和漫射照明两种。

所谓直射照明就是光源的反射光直接进入相机镜头，而漫射照明，亦称散乱光照明，就是光源的反射光不直接进入镜头，而是经过多级反射后进入镜头。

两种照明的光路具体形式如图1所示。

而对于同一个物体的拍摄，在直射照明和漫射照明两种照明条件之下所得到的图像差别是比较大的。如图2所示，为同一物体在直射和漫射两种照明方式下所获得的图像。
