程式控制器在发表初期被称为简称PLC, 先的目的是取代继电器,执行继电器逻辑及其他计时或计数等功能的顺序控制为主, 所以也称顺序控制器,其结构也像一部微电脑,所以也可称为微电脑可程式控制器，直到1976年,美国电机制造协会正式给予命名, 即可程式控制器,简称PC,由于目前个人电脑极为普遍, 加上常与可程式控制器配合使用,为了区分两者, 所以一般都称可程式控制器为PLC 以加区别.
